What it does

Why people take it

  • 1500 mg calcium citrate

The form that does not depend on stomach acid

  • Supports bones and teeth

Calcium is needed for the maintenance of normal bones

  • D3 for absorption

15 mcg, because calcium without it is largely wasted

  • Muscle strength and mobility

Calcium and magnesium both contribute to normal muscle function

  • Gentle on digestion

Citrate avoids the bloating that carbonate is known for

  • One tablet a day

With or without food - 60 tablets per bottle

The problem

What thinning bone does not tell you

  • 01

    Nothing, until something breaks

Bone density falls silently for years. The first sign is usually a fracture from a fall that should not have caused one.

  • 02

Cramps and muscle twitches at night

Calcium and magnesium are both used in normal muscle function, and Indian diets tend to run short of both.

  • 03

Calcium tablets that upset the stomach

Carbonate needs stomach acid to dissolve, and the undissolved remainder is what causes the bloating and constipation.

  • 04

    Taking calcium without vitamin D

Without D3, far less of the calcium you swallow is actually absorbed. On its own it is largely wasted.

A bottle of Danacal calcium citrate and vitamin D3 tablets, 60 tablets

Why it works

Citrate, not carbonate - and never calcium alone

Calcium carbonate is cheaper, which is why most tablets use it, but it needs stomach acid to dissolve and that is the source of nearly every complaint people have about calcium supplements. Calcium citrate dissolves independently of stomach acid, so it can be taken with or without food and is considerably easier on digestion. Danacal adds the three things calcium needs around it: 15 mcg of vitamin D3, without which absorption drops sharply; 100 mg of magnesium, which works with calcium in bone and muscle; and 200 mg of omega-9. One tablet a day, or two if your doctor advises it.

What is in it

Every ingredient, with its amount.

Danacal pairs 1500 mg of calcium citrate with 15 mcg (600 IU) of vitamin D3, 100 mg of magnesium and 200 mg of omega-9.

The form matters more than most labels admit. Calcium carbonate, which is what the majority of cheap calcium tablets use, needs stomach acid to dissolve and is the usual reason calcium supplements cause bloating and constipation. Citrate does not depend on stomach acid, which makes it easier to take with or without food and considerably gentler. D3 is included because calcium absorption depends on it, and magnesium because calcium and magnesium are used together in bone and in muscle. Calcium is needed for the maintenance of normal bones and teeth; vitamin D contributes to the normal absorption and use of calcium.

Supplement facts4 ingredients
Calcium Citrate1500 mg

Needed for the maintenance of normal bones and teeth and for normal muscle function. Citrate dissolves without stomach acid, which is why it is tolerated where carbonate is not.

Vitamin D3 (Cholecalciferol)15 mcg (600 IU)

Contributes to the normal absorption and utilisation of calcium. Without it, most of the calcium in a tablet is not taken up.

Magnesium100 mg

Contributes to the maintenance of normal bones and to normal muscle function, alongside calcium rather than instead of it.

Omega-9 (Oleic Acid)200 mg

A monounsaturated fatty acid included as part of the overall formulation.

How to take it

Take 1 tablet daily, or up to 2 tablets daily, as directed by a healthcare professional. Calcium citrate can be taken with or without food. If you take two, space them apart - calcium is absorbed better in smaller doses.

Who it is for

A daily calcium and vitamin D3 tablet for adults, and particularly for women approaching or past menopause and for anyone advised to increase calcium intake.

Testing and evidence

Manufactured in a GMP-certified, FSSAI-approved facility. Vegetarian. Calcium citrate rather than carbonate, and the form is printed on the pack.

Safety information

Not for medicinal use. Keep out of reach of children. Do not exceed the recommended dose. Keep calcium two hours clear of iron supplements, thyroid medication and certain antibiotics, all of which it can interfere with. If you have kidney disease, a history of kidney stones, or are on prescription medication, consult your doctor before use.

The routine

How to take it

  1. 1

    One tablet daily

With or without food - citrate does not need a meal to dissolve.

  2. 2

Keep iron and thyroid medicine apart

Calcium blocks the absorption of both. Leave two hours between them.

  3. 3

    Split a second tablet

If your doctor advises two, take them at different times. Calcium absorbs better in smaller doses.

Before you buy

Questions

Carbonate is cheaper and carries more calcium by weight, but it needs stomach acid to dissolve. That is why it has to be taken with food, why it causes bloating and constipation for so many people, and why it works poorly for anyone on acid-reducing medication. Citrate dissolves regardless of stomach acid, so it can be taken any time and is much gentler.
